Thursday... Another Steady Day

By Chief Christian Karotko
March 19, 2009

The day started out at 0745hrs. with Edinboro and CECPA Medic 2 getting sent to a reported motor vehicle accident at Waterford St. and Perry Ln. Rescue/Engine 384, Squad 387 and Fire Police 399 responded. CECPA Medic 2 arrived on scene and reported two vehicles minor to moderate with two class 4 patients. Squad 387 arrived and obtained two patient refusals. Rescue/Engine 384 arrived on scene and secured the vehicles and cleaned the debris off the road. 384 and 387 returned in service in about a half hour while fire police 399 remained on scene assisting Edinboro PD with traffic control.

Later in the afternoon while the volunteers were doing some spring cleaning around the firehouse, the bell rang around 1534hrs. for the RIT Team to assist Platea on a structure fire on Cross Station Rd. Ext. Engine 382 responded within minutes. Platea Chief 580 (Freeland) was on scene with a one story wood frame residential with a working fire. 382 arrived on scene, met with command and set up on the A/D corner of the house. Firefighters on scene made quick work of the fire and during this time several pets were rescued from the house. One of the pets, Max the family cat was pulled from the house. When crews found the cat, he had very shallow respirations. Some members of the RIT Team along with Medic 1 (Maynard) from West County Paramedics used the Pet Resucitation Mask from 382 to bring Max back. After a few minutes, Max was returned to it's thankful owner. During this time, the other half of the RIT Team did accountability, threw some ladders and provided safety of the fire grounds. The RIT Team operated for just over an hour. The Pet Resucitation Masks were donated to the Edinboro Fire Dept. from Camboro Veterinary Hospital of Edinboro and this was the first the mask was used by the volunteers.

At 1645hrs. just as Engine 382 was clearing the Platea fire, West County Communications dispatched Edinboro to assist McKean Hose Co. on a structure fire on Pinetree Rd. 382 responded and Rescue/Engine 384 responded with a crew of four that were standing by at the firehouse while 382 was operating in Platea. McKean units arrived on scene and reported a garage fire that was already on the ground. Engine 382 and Rescue/Engine 384 were placed in service prior to arrival and command held the box with the McKean units and West Ridge Engine 473.
