The 2010 Annual Fund Drive is now underway, however you can donate at anytime using PayPal. Once again, we are asking you to donate to our Annual Fund Drive to enable us to continue to provide you with the level of care in which you have come to expect. We ask that each resident donates 1/10th of one percent of the value of their home. For example, if your home is valued at $80,000, we ask that you donate $80. If your home is valued at $225,000, we ask that you donate $225. We understand that some families can not afford to donate this percent. Nevertheless, we would appreciate a donation from you in any amount that your family can afford. And remember, every donation is tax deductible. It?s never too late to donate ? donations are accepted throughout the year.
In previous years fewer than thirty percent of our residents have donated to our annual appeal. Imagine if we only responded to thirty percent of the over 1000 calls our volunteers answer every year. This year our goal is to exceed that percentage. As the cost of equipment and training rises we need your support more than ever so we can continue to focus on the important issues of protecting you and your family. Please don?t let us or your neighbors down, donate today.

We also want to take a moment to answer some questions we have received from our residents over the years regarding our funding sources:
Don't We Have A Paid Fire Department ?
The membership of the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department are all volunteer. Our members are not paid for their services, but volunteer out of a sense of pride and commitment without receiving a pay check. In reality our members lose money as most volunteers often miss work or spend some of their own money to buy equipment or by attend training. Our firefighters pride themselves on attaining the highest level of training. Each year our firefighters respond to over 1,000 calls in all conditions and at all hours of the day or night.
Doesn't the Fire Department Only Responds to Fires?
The fire department provides more than fire protections services. We handle a vast array of emergencies from vehicle rescues to responding to requests for an ambulance. Our Department has members trained to respond to emergency medical incidents, confined space rescues, vehicle rescues, water and ice incidents, and of course fires of all kinds. When any emergency occurs, we help the community without hesitation!
I Pay Property and Income Taxes, Don't These Taxes Support the Department?
The Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department receives support from both the Borough of Edinboro and Washington Township in the form of monetary donations and also in Worker's Compensation coverage, vehicle insurance coverage, and in-kind services. However, there is not a "fire tax" in either municipality that provides funding directly to the Department. Our main source of income comes from our ambulance billing and then from funds donated by members of our community.
Doesn't The Department Receive Money From the State and Other Grants?
Yes, the Department does receive funding from the Pennsylvania Fireman's Relief Act which provides funding to support training, equipment, and injury benefits for members. This funding is based on income from a tax on foreign fire insurance premiums and is divided amongst all departments statewide. The Department has also over the years participated in numerous grant programs and in some cases has been very successful in being awarded funding. While these funds provide for equipment, they can not be depended on annual and funding allotments have decreased while the grants themselves have become very competitive. Our annual fund drive funds are used to offset our day to day costs and to pay on existing equipment costs.
